Applications for Universitys in NSW & the ACT open on 7 August. On time applications close on 27 September. CHECK that there are no special requirements for your course. (tests, interviews or portfolios etc as these may have earlier closing dates)
If you are away early next year you may need to authorise someone to act for you. Check in the UAC guide.
If you want to take a year off most universities allow you to defer but you will need to check first.

If after the final round of offers you have not been placed in a course it may still be worthwhile contacting or visiting the university of your choice to explain why you wish to be considered if any vacanies arise.
